North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts
November 2001 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.73

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 20, 2001 -- The North American-based manufacturers of
semiconductor equipment posted $612.3 million in orders in November 2001 and a book-to-bill
ratio of 0.73, according to the November 2001 Express Report published today by Semiconductor
Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 0.73 means that $73 worth of new
orders were received for every $100 of product shipped for the month.

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in November 2001 was $612.3 million. The
bookings figure is about 5 percent below the revised October 2001 level of $647.1 million and
77 percent below the $2.71 billion in orders posted in November 2000.

The three-month average of worldwide billings in November 2001 was $842.2 million. The billings
figure is approximately 6 percent below the revised October 2001 level of $896.7 million and 65
percent below the November 2000 billings level of $2.42 billion.

"North American suppliers of manufacturing equipment for the semiconductor ndustry continue to
see orders drop on a monthly basis, reflecting the decline in global electronics production, excessive
amount of existing manufacturing capacity and curtailed investment by the world's chip makers," said
Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "Billings have continued to slide to levels not seen since
early 1995. However, the rates of decline for both billings and orders have lessened in recent months
compared to the steeper descent earlier in the year."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving
average billings for the North American semiconductor equipment industry. Billings and bookings
figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
  June 2001 July 2001 August 2001 September 2001(final) October 2001(revised) November 2001(prelim.)

SEMI Releases Third Quarter Worldwide
Equipment Market Figures

SAN JOSE, Calif., November 27, 2001 -- Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International
(SEMI), the global industry association of companies that supply manufacturing technology and
materials to the world’s chip makers, reported worldwide semiconductor manufacturing
equipment shipments of US$5.6 billion in the third quarter of 2001.  The figure is55.6 percent
below the same quarter a year ago and 20.2 percent below the shipment figure for the second
quarter of 2001.

SEMI also reported worldwide equipment orders of $3.92 billion in the third quarter of 2001.
The figure is 75.0 percent below the same quarter a year ago and 12.0 percent below the
orders figure for the second quarter of 2001.

"The ongoing malaise in the semiconductor equipment sector resulting from poor economic
conditions, excess capacity levels and weak end-unit demand has been apparent for some
time," said Elizabeth Schumann, SEMI director of industry research and statistics.
"Consequently, the significant decline in capital equipment shipments and third quarter results
for the worldwide industry have been anticipated."

The quarterly shipment data by region in billion of U.S. dollars; and year-over-year and
quarter-over-quarter growth rates by region are as follows:

North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry
Posts October 2001 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.71

SAN JOSE, Calif., November 20, 2001 -- The North American-based manufacturers of
semiconductor equipment posted $651.1 million in orders in October 2001 and a book-to-bill
ratio of 0.71, according to the October 2001 Express Report published today by Semiconductor
Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).  A book-to-bill of 0.71 means that $71 worth of
new orders were received for every $100 of product shipped for the month.

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in October 2001 was $651.1 million.
The bookings figure is 5 percent above the revised September 2001 level of $619.2 million and
78 percent below the $2.99 billion in orders posted in October 2000.  October 2000 marked
the orders peak of the current cycle for North American-based manufacturers.

The three-month average of worldwide billings in October 2001 was $916.2 million.  The billings
figure is 5 percent below the revised September 2001 level of $967.4 billion and is 64 percent
below the October 2000 billings level of $2.57 billion. October 2000 also marked the billings
peak of the current cycle.

"Excess capacity and weak end-market demand continue to beleaguer the semiconductor
equipment industry," said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI.  "While the decline in
orders has abated, the average monthly shipment figure continues to weaken and there is no
appreciable indication of a near-term trend reversal."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month
moving average billings for the North American semiconductor equipment industry.  Billings
and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.  Participants report the value of equipment
shipped and billed and the value of new orders net of cancellations.

SEMI 2001年第三四半期 シリコンウェーハ出荷量を発表
全世界シリコンウェーハ出荷量 17パーセント減少

SEMI(Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International、

North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry
Posts September 2001 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.65

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 23, 2001 -- The North American-based manufacturers of
semiconductor equipment posted $644 million in orders in September 2001 and a book-to-bill
ratio of 0.65, according to the September 2001 Express Report published today by
Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).  A book-to-bill of 0.65 means
that $65 worth of new orders were received for every $100 of product shipped for the month.

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in September 2001 was $644 million.  The
bookings figure is 11 percent below the revised August 2001 level of $724 million and 78
percent below the $2.89 billion in orders posted in September 2000.

The three-month average of worldwide shipments in September 2001 was $993 million.  The
shipments figure is 13 percent below the revised August 2001 level of $1.15 billion and is 60
percent below the September 2000 shipments level of $2.48 billion.

"As expected, recent global events have exacerbated the already poor forward visibility for
high-tech industries as consumer confidence remains weak and businesses hold off on
spending," said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI.  "Industry analysts have been
fairly unified in pushing out the timing of recovery for the semiconductor and capital
equipment industries; it is still too early to determine the long-term fiscal effects of ongoing
geo-political events."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month
moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry.
Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.

SEMI Receives NIST Grant
to Develop Internet-based Security Framework
for Semiconductor Manufacturing Productivity

Project Team Includes AMD, domainLogix, ILS Technology and Oceana Sensor Technologies

AUSTIN, Texas, October 16, 2001 -- Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International
(SEMI), a global industry association, today announced that it has been awarded $5 million from
the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) through the Advanced Technology
Program (ATP) to develop, prototype and validate a security framework for electronic
collaboration via the Internet as a means of enhancing semiconductor manufacturing
productivity.

SEMI, serving as the project administrator for the cost-shared project that encompasses an
approximately $10.1 million budget, will collaborate in a joint venture development partnership
that includes Advanced Micro Devices, domainLogix, ILS Technology and Oceana Sensor
Technologies.  The joint venture aims to create within three years a security framework for
electronic collaboration that will allow semiconductor manufacturers and equipment suppliers
to share information while protecting proprietary information on both sides.

"We are extremely proud to receive this award, which is telling of the importance that security
plays in the future of semiconductor manufacturing," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO
of SEMI.  "The unique expertise of the joint venture partners will provide an enormous benefit
to bringing full Internet capability to the entire semiconductor industry, providing the security
framework necessary for device makers and their equipment suppliers to take advantage of
electronic collaboration to boost fab productivity."

The project team will validate its approach by building eDiagnostics and eManufacturing
applications, demonstrating that they resolve security problems and offer compelling
improvements in factory effectiveness, and feeding back this direct experience to improve the
security framework. The vendor- and party-neutral framework will be developed as an open
standard.
It will permit multiple parties to collaborate simultaneously on issues that involve complex
interactions between multiple pieces of equipment.

A security reference model will be created, allowing a firm to specify a detailed formal security
policy that describes precisely under what conditions partner firms can access data.  The model
will reflect the way the customer really makes decisions about granting or denying access
rather than the traditional procedural approach to security.

"Chip performance improves at an astonishing rate year after year, and one of the first steps
to attain higher productivity is to make sure that factory tools are quickly repaired," said Harvey
Wohlwend, e-Diagnostics program manager, International SEMATECH (ISMT).  "One goal of
e-Diagnostics is to provide a mechanism for sharing more data between chip makers and
equipment suppliers. Electronic collaboration and establishing a security framework will allow
chip makers and their suppliers to share important information while protecting sensitive data,
permitting both to improve their respective performance levels."

The project aims to create a flexible firewall, a novel distributed architecture that can protect
any accessible device (from a factory server down to an embedded sensor) and that enforces
the security policies of the fab and the equipment suppliers.

ATP provides cost-shared funding to industry, non-profits and universities to help advance
particularly challenging, high-risk research and development projects that have the potential
to spark important, broad-based economic or social benefits for the United States.  The
program supports projects that industry cannot fully fund on its own because of significant
technical risks or limited resources.

ATP awards are made on the basis of rigorous competitive review considering scientific and
technical merit of each proposal and its potential benefits to the U.S. economy.  The program
funds enabling technology research, but does not support product development work.
Applicants must include a detailed business plan for bringing the new technology to market once
technical milestones have been achieved under ATP support.  The program is managed by the
National Institute of Standards and Technology. For more information about the Advanced
Technology Program awards visit the NIST website at www.atp.nist.gov.

President Chen to Open
SEMICON Taiwan September 17

Sixth Annual Semiconductor Manufacturing Exposition to be Largest-Ever

TAIPEI, Taiwan, September 6, 2001 -- Taiwan President Chen Shui-Bian is scheduled to
preside over the opening of the sixth annual SEMICON Taiwan exposition, Monday,
September 17, at the Taipei World Trade Center.
SEMICON Taiwan, the region's largest event dedicated to semiconductor manufacturing
technology, runs September 17-19 and is organized by Semiconductor Equipment and
Materials International (SEMI), co-sponsored by the China External Trade Development
Council (CETRA), and endorsed by the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA).
"It is a great honor to welcome President Chen to SEMICON Taiwan," said George Lin, vice
president of Asia-Pacific operations for SEMI.  "Taiwan's semiconductor industry continues
to grow in importance, even during difficult economic times such as we are experiencing
in 2001.  President Chen has shown dedication towards strengthening Taiwan's
semiconductor-related industries and we sincerely value his support."
Now in its sixth year, SEMICON Taiwan is the region's largest event dedicated to the
technologies and trends of semiconductor manufacturing.
This year, more than 500 exhibiting companies will occupy more than 13,000 square
meters of exhibit space in both halls of the Taipei World Trade Centre.  The companies
exhibiting at the event represent the world's leading developers, manufacturers and
suppliers of the equipment, materials and technologies used to make semiconductors.
These tools and technologies enable chipmakers such as TSMC, UMC and Intel to make
the chips that power all commercial and consumer electronics, from computers to
networking equipment to mobile phones.
While almost all of the world's major chipmakers have cutback capital spending in 2001 in
response to the global slowdown in demand for electronics, companies continue to invest in
new technologies in order to remain competitive.  "In order to position their businesses for
the next upturn, companies must invest in the latest technologies that will enable them to
provide leading-edge products," Lin said.  "The technologies on display at SEMICON Taiwan
represent the most advanced manufacturing equipment and materials available."
Additional information about SEMICON Taiwan 2001, including visitor and program
registration, is available on the SEMI website, www.semi.org.
(EDITORS NOTE: Qualified journalists interested in attending should contact Miss Irene Yu,

Enhanced Global SEMIndex Launched at
www.SEMIndex.org

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 27, 2001--An enhanced SEMIndex(R), a powerful web-based index
research tool to help analysts and investors track the chip equipment and materials industry,
was unveiled today.
The announcement was made by SEMIndex sponsor Semiconductor Equipment and Materials
International (SEMI), a global trade association of more than 2,400 companies that provide the
technology and materials for building chips to power computers, cell phones and thousands of
other industrial and consumer electronics.
The Global SEMIndex and all sub-indices have been restated historically in the new site.  These
restated index values may be obtained on the website by downloading available Excel-formatted
data.
"Now, investors worldwide can receive Index values every three to four minutes for 20 of the
24 hours in the global trading day," explained SEMI senior vice president and Index spokesman
David Ringler.
"We'll provide data on eight different sector indices, including a global index, regional indexes for
Europe, Japan and the U.S. and for several varying market capitalization categories," Ringler said.
He also noted that much of the information is now downloadable as Excel-formatted data.
The SEMIndex, produced for SEMI by InvestorCom, Inc. in New York, is comprised of 65 of
SEMI's global public semiconductor equipment, materials and related services companies.
The only global sector index of its kind, the SEMIndex was created to educate investors about
the sector and the difference in the performance of semiconductor and materials sector
equities from semiconductor stocks as represented by the Philadelphia SOX index.
The SEMIndex includes industry sector companies with market capitalizations of U.S. $50
million or more. The market-weighted index includes companies from the U.S., Japan and Europe.
In addition to a primary market-weighted index, there are sub-indexes based on geographical
regions and market capitalizations.
The SEMIndex web page also provides links to index company websites, five-year historical
sector performance information and current industry market statistics.
The SEMIndex, adjusted daily for input from Asian and European markets, was set at a value of
100 on January 4, 1999. The high this year was 260.
New SEMIndex features:
All three regional  indices (U.S., Japan and Europe) are now tracked on an intraday, 3-4 minute
delay, live basis; investors in Tokyo during their trading day can watch their region's SEMIndex
trading activity on an essentially   moment-to-moment basis; same for Europe and U.S.
The composite global SEMIndex will display the entire index results on a 24 hour world time
basis; viewers can see the relative movement of the composite index on a region by region
basis.
Viewers can easily download index data for a particular display (e.g., Japan index, 5 yrs.) in an
Excel tabular format; that data can then be merged with other Excel-formatted data for
comparative purposes.
Regional SEMindices will now include comparative regional major indices (e.g., Tokyo Nikkei,
German Dax)  in addition to the Nasdaq and SOX in the U.S.
Based in San Jose, Calif., SEMI is an international industry association serving more than 2,400
companies participating in the semiconductor and flat panel display equipment and materials
markets.  SEMI maintains offices in Austin, Beijing, Boston, Brussels, Hsinchu, Moscow, Seoul,

North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 21, 2001 -- The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor
equipment posted$764 million in orders in July 2001 and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.67, according to
the July 2001 Express Report published today by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials
International (SEMI).  A book-to-bill of 0.67 means that $67 worth of new orders were received for
every $100 of product shipped for the month.

The three-month average of worldwide bookings in July 2001 was $764.2 million.  The bookings
figure is five percent above the revised June 2001 level of $727.5 million and 74 percent below
the $2.9 billion in orders posted in July 2000.

The three-month average of worldwide shipments in July 2001 was $1.14 billion.  The shipments
figure is 12 percent below the revised June 2001 level of $1.3 billion and is 52 percent below the
July 2000 billings level of $2.4 billion.

"Slightly higher orders and a continued decline in billings resulted in a higher book-to-bill ratio
for the month of July," said Elizabeth Schumann, director of industry research and statistics for
SEMI.  "The bookings figures providesome indication that capital equipment orders may have
reached bottom, though capital equipment manufacturersremain cautious given the existing
uncertainties for the world's economies and for the semiconductor industry looking ahead."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month
moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry.
Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
